While very important, taking proper care of contact lenses is just one aspect of having good eye health.  Keeping the rest of your body healthy can go a long way in keeping your eye health from deteriorating.

Nutrition is critical to keeping your eyes healthy as well as giving you ample amounts of energy. Carotenoids, also known as Vitamin A is an essential nutrient which keeps eyes healthy and vision sharp, and also helps your body produce energy. ¬†It can be found in leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, and chard, as well as cage-free eggs, wild caught fatty fish (like cod) and livers from grass-fed cows for those who aren’t vegans or vegetarians.

In addition to nutrition, exercise is important to keeping eyes healthy as well.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a very common health problem today and one that lead to vision loss.

One of the best ways to prevent high blood pressure is through exercise. Getting at least 60 minutes of cardiovascular exercise every day is one of the best ways to safeguard your health and feel great. In addition, some strength training 2-3 days a week is a great way to maintain a normal blood pressure. If you aren’t experienced with strength training, consider hiring a personal trainer to guide you through exercises properly.

Another tip is to make sure you wear sunglasses whenever you are outside during the day, to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet light from the sun.

With a proper combination of nutrition and exercise, you’ll ensure you keep your eyes healthy in addition to your entire body.
